Scones - Sweet with Chocolate and Cranberries

Scones with Chocolate Chips and Cranberries

A friend suggested an article on scones.  She was thinking colder weather, the warm and cozy feeling of something baking in the oven, maybe something nice and hot to drink.  Whatever.

Strangely, my thoughts drifted back to my high school days and what would have happened if I told my buddies that I wanted a scone.  There would have been pushing and shoving.  I would have been the endless butt of jokes for days, with pinkies sticking out in the air as if holding some imaginary cup of tea.  I can hear them asking, oh so sweetly, if I wanted some clotted cream or maybe some petit fours. Crusty Roasted Potatoes

Crusty Roasted Potatoes

I always loved that scene at the end of one of the Godfather movies where Michael Corleone assumes the leadership of the family.  The dons, one by one, salute him by taking his hand and kissing his ring.  I have always had a fantasy of the same thing happening after serving a really good dish.  Well, this humble potato dish might do the trick. Yorkshire Pudding

Yorkshire Pudding

I did a post recently on The Traditional British Sunday Lunch, which featured roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, crusty roasted potatoes and bread pudding.  Even though I wrote as if I had a long experience with this classic meal, actually I had only helped a friend – and made notes – one time.  However, my wife and I recently hosted a dinner party for 10 people featuring all of these dishes and it was a great success. Traditional British Sunday Lunch

Thousands of pubs in Great Britain, especially those outside of London, offer a “Sunday Lunch” every week.  Traditionally, the main feature is a standing rib roast, which is always accompanied by Yorkshire pudding and amazingly crunchy roast potatoes.  You always get a nice dessert (also called a “pudding”) and plenty of liquid libations.  It is truly a great winter classic meal. Guest Post No. 2:

Horseradish Encrusted Prime Rib

The Annual New Year’s Dinner Award goes to Howard Storck – charter member of the Bravado Cooking Society – and Carla Gorsky.  (They, btw, were the ones that triggered the special post about making a one-handed pie crust – a must see with the video clip from “The Postman Always Rings Twice”.)  They were helped by sous-chef Larry Hake and their dog, Charlie.

Boy, Did I Like The Prime Rib – Hope I Can Make It Until Midnight!

Here is Howard’s communiqué:

How about a horseradish encrusted prime rib…with a red wine reduction sauce…homemade creme fraiche….roasted potatoes and onions with sage…and roasted vegetables? (more…)
